babymilk product market forms the largest part of the baby food market, with a share of 40%. There are three baby milk market segments : infant formulas (0 to 6 months, second age and follow-on milks, the third being the fastest growing market of the three segments.
The world baby milk market is evaluated at 1.130,000 tons in 2010, accounting for
usd 11,5 billion. Together, Europe and North America represent 33% of a stagnant market. In total value, the US alone
represent 30% of the world market. The fastest developing areas
is the Asian market that is also the largest (53%).
Infant formula has changed considerably in the past 15 years. The producers have created more sophisticated formula, which come closer each year to mother's milk as well as formula adapted to specific needs (e.g.
formula for low weight/pre-term infant, hypoallergenic formulas). The main axis of development followed being:
- Improve infant digestion
- Reduce the protein level
- Addition of LcPufas, specific milk fractions, nucleotides and probiotics
Other evolutions concern the lipid ratio and the ratio of the different fatty acids.
