Update 2010

In 2008, the total market for clinical nutrition is evaluated at around 12 US billion. Clinical nutrition is a vast domain including enteral and parenteral feeding, covering denutrition in intensive stress such as surgical trauma, burns, eating disorders, etc. Products are considered as pharmaceuticals and therefore manufacturing must follow strict conditions. It is an area of medicine that seeks to identify and treat medical disorders in humans that result from improper or inadequate diet, or from diseases that make the body unable to handle the nutrients delivered to it in the normal diet.

The market can be segmented in parenteral, enteral and home nutrition, with a progressive shift between these categories. A medical food, on its side, is prescribed by a physician when a patient has special nutrient needs in order to manage a disease or health condition, and the patient is under the physician's ongoing care.

The present report investigates the current clinical and medical nutritional products on the market as well as the use of ingredients and new expectations towards those ingredients.
